Jissenkan Budo Karate
Real Martial Arts
Real Dojo
Daily Practice
In Japanese, jissen means to place something into daily practice. It also means real combat. Kan, simply means "house," and Budo is "the way to enlightenment through warrior training."
Jissenkan Budo Karate is not just a style, but a system; not a fixed path, but an ever-changing one.
Gichin Funakoshi, the founder of Shotokan Karate, echoed the belief of several other masters of his time, when he stated, "There is no style in karate. If a martial art or karate style truly supposed all the others, we would know."

Our karate system is the result of over 40 years of continual martial arts training in various disciplines. While many other karate schools focus on competition, point-sparring, board breaking and other aspects of sport, we choose to train and continually develop ourselves mentally and physically.

We study karate in a manner that it was originally intended, for purpose of self-defense. In reality, self-defense is a polite way to say, "close-quarter combat." That's what karate is actually supposed to be. And if you're going study combat, you need to have a well-rounded system that address all aspects of non-ritual, real fighting.

Our karate classes typically follow the same theme:
-
Kihon: Basics in punching, kicking, body movement.
-
Kata: Forms that teach basic movement patterns used in fighting.
-
Kumite: Patterned as well as freestyle fighting that allows for practical application.
-
Weapons: Karate students learn various weapons including, bo (staff), nunchucku, stick fighting and more

Additionally, we offer classes in taijutsu to supplement our karate training. Tai (body) Jutsu (method or art) classes involve:
-
Evasion and deflection.
-
Throws and takedowns.
-
Joint locks and pin.
-
Strangulation and submission.
-
Grappling and ground fighting.
-
Classical weapons such as the quarter staff and wooden sword.

Taijutsu classes are open to anyone, regardless of rank or style. These classes simply explore the many facets of grappling. We do not offer rank for taijutsu, as it is simply a part of our karate training.
