Jissenkan Budo
 Real Martial Arts
Real Dojo

Daily Practice

In Japanese, jissen means to place something into daily practice.  It also means real combat.  Kan, simply means "house," and Budo is "the way to enlightenment through warrior training."

Jissenkan Budo is not just a style, but a system made up of two primary arts:

Karate Jutsu is a form of hand-to-hand combat that involves weaponless as well armed methods of self-defense.

We utilize theories and training practices of Japanese and Okinawan styles.  That means that our students experience the power and speed of Japanese Karate-Do as well as the close-quarter fighting and conditioning methods used in most Okinawan systems.

We do not believe in sports Karate or competition.  In its original form, Karate was designed for self-defense in lethal confrontations.  We believe in old training methods such as body and bone conditioning as well as modern adaptations such as whole body strengthening, calisthenics and resistance training.

Boxing And Kickboxing are a part of our training program.  Advanced students have the opportunity to spar with and without gloves and pads to further their knowledge and experience.

Karate training involves multiple aspects such as:

  • Kihon:  Basics in punching, kicking, body movement.

  • Kata:  Forms that teach basic movement patterns used in fighting.

  • Kumite:  Patterned as well as freestyle fighting that allows for practical application.

  • Weapons:  Karate students learn various weapons including, bo (staff), nunchucku, stick fighting and more

Jujutsu was originally designed for close-quarter combat.  In Japanse, the phrase, ju used in "jujutsu" means soft or yielding.  Our jujutsu classes involve techniques and principles from Japanese Aikido as well as Kodenkan Jujutsu.  These classes offer an array of "soft" martial arts techniques such as:

  • Evasion and deflection.

  • Throws and takedowns.

  • Joint locks and pin.

  • Strangulation and submission.

  • Grappling and ground fighting.

Weapons training is a part of our curriculum.  Weapons that complement our karate and jujutsu classes include:

  • Boken (woodent sword)

  • Shinai (bamboo sword)

  • Jo (quarter staff)

  • Bo (six-foot staff)

  • Escrima (short sticks)

  • Nunchaku (short sticks connected by a chain)

  • Tomfa (club with a perpendicular handle)
