Rank Testing At Tatsu Dojo

We've been training people from all walks of life for over 15 years.  Our name has changed and the dojo has moved several times, but the heart and soul of what we do is expressed by our past and current students.

Training with Dave has been some of the most important times of my life.  Not only for the training itself, but also for the camaraderie and respect you feel.  There's always complete trust.  Ignoring the inevitable bumps and bruises (and dislocated costal cartilage. Kidding - my own fault!), never any "cheap shots" or lack-of-control issues.   And almost as enjoyable as the training was the hearty meal or refreshing beverage afterwards.  Which only enhances the camaraderie.  As a teacher and a friend, Dave has no equal.

I have been in and out of various martial arts study for thirty years.  I’ve attained what’s considered black belt level in taijiquan (tai chi) and spent time in schools of Kenpo, Taekwondo, Gongfu and Tang Soo Do.  I also hold a Doctorate in Medical Qigong and Masters in Oriental Medicine.  I cite my background only to point out that for the first time, studying with Teacher Dave Magliano and his students, I feel like I have finally found my dojo.  Tatsu Dojo is a wonderful balance of discipline and fun.  We are all there to push and challenge ourselves to maximum potential while reaching out and providing support or advice to our fellow friends who might need a little help.  I can only recommend this school to men and women who are ready to challenge themselves and not only be okay with, but look forward to bumps and bruises knowing that the pain and frustration only nudges us towards our ultimate potential.

This group focuses on realistic training that prepares you to be comfortable and confident to diffuse and end conflicts before they escalate.  Full contact, wooden and metal weapons are utilized to properly engage our fears, conditioning and limitations during training.  This is not a belt-focused school; we are all considered beginners until we are ready to prove otherwise, and earn the black belt.  Personally, I am not concerned about when I can achieve my black belt in this system.  I only look forward to pushing my fitness and tactile skills further every class to remind myself that I am still here, and can continue to be better every day.

As a teenager I was extremely lucky to train under Dave  (Mr. Mags).  I went to school with his 2 sons and fell into training with them and a small, dedicated group. We had a lot of fun, worked very hard, and pushed past our mental and physical limits. Mind. Body. Spirit.

I gained a new level of self-confidence, was humbled many times, and there were no egos brought to training.

I was not athletic or into sports, but I grew stronger than I had ever been and had a much greater sense of physical awareness.

I was pushed to fight through adversity and never quit. We all worked to challenge each other, and to overcome those challenges.

Mr. Mags was an amazing role model, took no excuses, and treated everyone equally. Everyone gave their all, all the time; for themselves and for one another. He brought out the best of us.

As an adult I found my way back to TatsuDojo after being away while finishing college. I have trained under Dave Magliano for 11 years as of 2021.

Throughout my exeriences I have felt that if I come to the dojo once a week | maintain what I've built, come twice a week I can grow and improve, come 3 times a week or more and I can really thrive.

Two summers ago I made the time and put in the effort it takes to reach my blackbelt. These tests are excruciating and all-encompassing of the many forms at TatsuDojo. A "mastery" of the basics is an indication that you are ready to learn who you are as a martial artist.

I have immense pride in achieving this at Tatsu Dojo and continuing to develop in my own way.

Today I have an even greater appreciation and understanding of what we train to achieve. Training offers deeper benefits at this stage of life as well. Mind. Body. Spirit.

I find a peace of mind regardless of my personal life or the world around me. I am able to focus in the moment, and I feel sharper of mind when training regularly.

I find my physical strengths, weaknesses to tackle, and time to push through limits. Training is both exhausting and rejuvenating. I never feel better than the exhaustion after intense sessions.

I always have a sense of brotherhood

when training at Tatsu Dojo. We are there to build each other's spirits and push each other to give it all. We respect each other's time and effort. We have iron to sharpen our own iron against. Dave continues to bring out the best in all of us.

I had the pleasure of training with Dave for 3 years before I moved out of state. The spaces changed, but the training was always world class. Some of my fondest memories were days when it was only Dave and I training in his garage in the summer heat. As a martial arts instructor, I often find myself channeling Dave's teachings in my own classes. In my 20+ years of martial arts training I have never had an instructor with a broader base of experiences to draw from. Dave is a wellspring of knowledge and I was truly blessed to call him my teacher and my friend.

Meet Tatsu Dojo Cincinnati!

I am grateful to be part of this family and have the opportunity to learn with David Magliano

My husband Matt E. has been training with him for the past 14 years and I am looking forward to stay more around to practice and learn more at Tatsu Dojo.  David teaches for real life situations.

I'm so stoked about this space we have to learn martial arts that I am now learning Japanese on Duolingo!
