Jissenkan Budo

Jissenkan Budo is not  just a style, but a system of martial arts arts that includes principles and techniques from Okinawan and Japanese Karate, Aikido and Jujutsu.

The Martial Way (Budo) prioritizes self-perfection of mind, body, spirit and character. It is more than just fighting.  However, we believe that in order for a dojo to produce students that have the ability to defend themselves, these arts must focus on the realities of hand-to-hand combat.

Kararte

The foundation of our striking arts come from Karate and western Boxing.  Karate was first and foremost a close-quarter combat art complete with striking, takedowns and attacks to vital areas and joints.

Our training involves kata (forms), conditioning and kumite (several types of sparring).  â€‹

Key elements include

  • Body hardening and conditioning

  • Stance, grounding

  • Precision and power striking

  • Joint destruction

  • Takedowns

  • Practical application and street fighting

  • Development of a martial mentality

As with all Budo, karate's main emphasis is on ending a fight quickly.  This is accomplished by knowing when, how and where to strike an aggressive person.

Karate is not a sport; it is a path to physical and mental toughness that has positive impacts on one's health and well-being.

Aikido

Martial Arts Interaction

We study and teach principles and techniques stemming from Japanese Aikido and Jujutsu.  These include:

  • Throws

  • Take-downs

  • Pins

  • Joint-locks

  • Ground Fighting

  • Weapons

Aikido (Aikijutsu) and Jujutsu were methods used by the Samurai for dealing with close-quarter combat scenarios, especially when one had lost their sword or was too close to use one.  Unlike many modern aspects of Jujitsu, older styles were based on sword culture and did not contain complex tie-ups on the ground.  The idea was to get off the ground as quickly as possible.

However, we do utilize grappling and ground fighting in our curriculum in order to help individuals become as well-rounded as possible.  Additionally, like throws and takedowns, it's a fantastic workout.
